Assignment 2-  Artificial Lighting Design Layout: LUMEN METHOD

Task

For this project, we will form a group of eight and select an indoor space measuring approximately from a given list, which includes options like a hospital, library, office, restaurant, museum, hypermarket, performing arts school, showroom, factory, or boutique. Other spaces can also be considered if relevant.

We begin by providing a brief background of the selected building, including its purpose and function. Then, we identify artificial and daylighting issues within the space, analyzing how lighting affects the functionality and comfort of the environment.

To present our findings, we create an overall floor layout showing the selected area, followed by a blow-up floor plan for a more detailed representation. We will perform Lumen Method calculations to assess the existing lighting levels and propose improvements. Additionally, we will prepare a reflected ceiling plan illustrating the proposed general lighting layout.

A cross-section drawing will be included to showcase light distribution and the type of lighting fittings used in the space. We will propose appropriate light fittings to enhance the space’s functionality and atmosphere. Furthermore, we will develop two sketches demonstrating alternative artificial lighting designs that can improve the lighting experience. These sketches will incorporate the surrounding elements of the space for a holistic design approach.

All findings will be compiled into two A2-size boards, formatted in either landscape or portrait orientation. We will also provide at least five references to support our research and design decisions.

Reflection

This project allows us to understand the importance of lighting design in creating functional and visually appealing spaces. Through data collection and analysis, we gain hands-on experience in lighting calculations and layout planning. The process of identifying lighting issues and proposing solutions helps us develop critical problem-solving skills. Collaborating with our team encourages us to exchange creative ideas and refine our approach to architectural lighting. Ultimately, this project enhances our ability to design well-lit, comfortable, and efficient indoor environments.
