Assignment 1
Diagramming Precedent Principles
Task
This group assignment involved selecting a precedent building designed as a bach or getaway home for 2 to 4 people. After obtaining approval from our tutor, we conducted in-depth research into the architect’s philosophy and design intentions. Our analysis covered key architectural principles, including concept, structure, context, circulation strategy, material use, space planning, and emotional composition. The findings were communicated through hand-drawn orthographic drawings, analysis diagrams, and diagrammatic models crafted from a single material.
The final deliverables included three A1 portrait boards featuring hand-drawn black-and-white site plans, floor plans, sections, and elevations at appropriate scales, along with analysis diagrams and photographs of the models. Each group member contributed a unique diagram and model to reflect individual interpretations of the architectural principles. Additionally, we documented our design process and exploration in an A4 landscape booklet and presented a 120-second narrated video summarizing our journey, from research to final output.
Reflection
This assignment enhanced my understanding of architectural principles and their practical applications. By analyzing the precedent, I learned how a building’s concept and context guide its design decisions and how elements like materiality and circulation influence spatial experience. Creating hand-drawn diagrams improved my technical drawing and composition skills, while crafting the models taught me precision and the value of simplicity in conveying ideas.
The assignment also deepened my appreciation for collaboration, as each member’s contributions enriched the overall understanding of the precedent. This experience not only strengthened my ability to visually analyze architecture but also instilled confidence in presenting complex ideas effectively through drawings, models, and multimedia.
