In a group of six, the assignment requires conducting a comprehensive case study on a building located in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. The task involves identifying and analyzing five architectural materials and two structural materials used in the selected building. One material must be highlighted for its experiential impact on end users, supported by a detailed illustration of its installation process.

The A1 presentation board will include:

1. The historical background of the building (location, establishment, architect).

2. Images and detailed information about the five architectural and two structural materials (properties, location, application, and selection reasoning).

3. An analysis of the chosen material, focusing on its user experience and installation sketches.

4. Visuals of the building (floor layout, elevations, and 3D perspectives).

Reflection

Our group selected Masjid Negara (National Mosque) in Kuala Lumpur for a comprehensive analysis of architectural and structural materials. This religious structure showcases a harmonious blend of traditional and modern design, symbolizing Malaysia's Islamic heritage. We identified five architectural materials and two structural materials, detailing their properties, locations, applications, and the rationale behind their selection. The focus material for experiential analysis was the blue mosaic tiles used in the main dome, chosen for their symbolic and aesthetic impact. We illustrated their installation process to highlight their integration into the mosque's design. Supporting visuals included floor layouts, elevations, and 3D perspectives, encapsulating the architectural grandeur and thoughtful material application. The study concluded with reflections on the effective use of materials to create an immersive spiritual experience.

 

This project deepened my appreciation for the meticulous material selection in architecture, particularly in religious spaces. Analyzing Masjid Negara’s innovative use of concrete and steel for structure and intricate mosaic tiles for aesthetics revealed the balance between functionality and artistry. Collaborating with my group honed my teamwork and analytical skills, while studying the installation process enriched my understanding of material integration. This experience reinforced the importance of materials in shaping user experience and inspired me to apply these insights to future designs.
