Assignment 3
Bach at Tumbling Rock
Task
The final project requires the design of a bach at Tumbling Rock, Bentong, Malaysia. The bach serves as a retreat for urban dwellers, offering a space for relaxation and connection with nature. Designed for the user and a partner, with occasional guest accommodation, the project emphasizes self-expression through architecture. It integrates user needs, site-specific design, and lightweight construction principles within a maximum built-up area of 150 sq.m. Key considerations include privacy, blending with the natural environment, and avoiding disruption to the surroundings.
Deliverables include site analysis, conceptual models, and detailed architectural drawings on three A1 portrait sheets. Required drawings include a site plan, floor plans, sections, elevations, and sectional details. Key diagrams explain spatial and formal composition, responding to user needs and site context. The submission also includes a 1:50 scale model, a design concept statement, and additional documentation such as precedent studies and a sketchbook.
The project highlights architectural principles like site-specific design, materiality, and spatial organization. It explores the relationship between the built environment and nature, fostering a unique narrative through architectural expression.
Reflection
This project deepened my understanding of architectural space-making and materiality. I explored the art of weaving techniques and bamboo construction, which taught me how traditional methods can inspire contemporary design. The iterative modeling process allowed me to experiment with form and spatial relationships, emphasizing sustainability and craftsmanship. Additionally, I improved my skills in presenting design ideas through precise drawings, models, and narratives. This experience strengthened my ability to create architecture that reflects personal identity while respecting the site’s natural character.
